The North York Moors

Contents

Introduction

These pages show some of the beauty of the North York Moors, including the Cleveland Hills and the North Sea coast. For convenience they are separated into two sections: the hinterland of the Moors with the Cleveland Hills and the North Sea coastline.

The North York Moors and Cleveland Hills

The North Yorkshire Moors and the Cleveland Hills rise to the north and east of the Vale of York and provide a paradise for lovers of moorland landscapes. Amongst the many attractions is the lovely town of Helmsley with its castle; the not-to-be-missed Walled Garden; the workshop of The Stickman (Keith Pickering) who produces hand made walking sticks to a very high standard; and the Ryeburn of Helmsley Tea Room and Ice Cream Parlour of Richard and Christine Otterburn, who make some of the finest ice cream in the known universe! A visit to Helmsley without calling on Richard and Christine is a wasted visit.

For railway enthusiasts there is the North York Moors Railway, with live steam-hauled trains running between Grosmont and Pickering, passing through the countryside used in the Television series "Heartbeat", including a stop at Goathland, the village used as "Adensfield".

North East Coast of Yorkshire

The north east coast of Yorkshire is another scenic feast. The coastline is full of picturesque coves and has several towns and villages worthy of a visit, not the least of which is Whitby, home of the finest cod in England.
